There I'd be – with thousands of mail pieces, all bundled up, stamped and ready to go.  Anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000 of my uncle's money would be riding on that single direct mail campaign.  If the mailing bombed ... I tremble to think of the consequences. 

On days like those, the terror was so thick you could cut it with a knife. 

You probably know other direct marketers who’ve done the same. You know – the kind who’d beg, steal or borrow enough money to finance a direct mail campaign. I personally know some people who put their homes, cars – and even their children’s college funds – in serious jeopardy just to send out a sales letter for a product that they were “sure” would make them a lot of money.

If the fear was so great, why do it, you ask?

Direct mail is undeniably one of the most powerful ways to make money.  But it sure is scary.  Mailings could sometimes cost tens – or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to roll out – and an average entrepreneur simply doesn’t have the financial cushion to survive the consequences if a mailing turns out to be a dud.  That’s the reason for the intense fear.

Now, don’t get me wrong – I’m fully aware that the product, the mailing list, the timing and other factors have a lot to do with the success of a mailing as well. 

But who am I to argue with success stories like this …

Gary Halbert, a marketer from Ohio, came up with a product idea – the family crest (coat-of-arms) – which he was convinced would sell quite well by mail.  He financed his “hunch” and embarked on a scary (and expensive) “do or die” campaign. 

Result:  Gary mailed out one sales letter that generated 7,300,000 customers.  His gross sales totaled $45 million in the first year alone! 

His success, which is now legendary among direct marketers, became the seed that grew into a successful mail order company, Halberts.  Gary reportedly had 40 employees whose only job was to make bank deposits, which sometimes consisted of 20,000 checks per day

According to several sources, Gary Halbert holds the distinction of having sent a mailing to almost every household in America.

You’ve got to wonder – if Gary mailed a sales letter to almost every household in America, how much did he have to spend in printing, postage and other expenses to generate those 7,300,000 customers?  You do the math.

The whole point of this exercise is to show you that now, you don’t have to keel over from terror every time you want to make the kind of money that was previously reserved only for gutsy and brave marketers.  The Internet has changed all that. 

The Internet is the only place on earth where you can truly market everyday with no money – or very little money – if you know how.

Just imagine the kind of fear I now have when I press the “Send” button that e-mails my newsletter to hundreds of thousands of names on my subscriber list (which would have cost me a quarter of a million dollars to send via postal mail). 

I have zero fear.  Zero stress.  Zero cost.  Just pure, unadulterated profits
